Today at 20:00 CEST the second round of Jackal<\/a> began – a time-limited server on one of the alien moons orbiting Wurm. Everyone starts from scratch there: no items and no skills (only affinities carry over), but skills start at 5 and grow three times faster. The whole community works together to win the land back from Jackal influence – destroying its beacons and building our own, and new villages can only be founded on Freedom ground. Fighting and beacons earn Jackal points, later exchanged for rewards back on Wurm. The round is set to last at least three months (preview on the forum<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jackal Lodestone already stands in The Fortress – it is the way to the other side. I’m heading through in a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I'm through. On the other side a starter town surrounded by a palisade, full of people in identical linen clothes and barefoot – we all start from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the town I talked with the Wanderer and got the first quest, "Starting From Scratch". Then I went outside the palisade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another new mob – a venerable isopod, a huge armoured woodlouse. A regular bear next to it for scale. My inventory is completely empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I left Freedom Outpost North (that's the name of the starter town) and headed out to look for resources. Every few minutes someone founds a new settlement. On the slope I botanize with bare hands – I get purple flowers and an onion, and once something I'm not even skilled enough to identify, so I toss it away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up close these trees have marbled red-grey bark. I haven't seen anything like it on Wurm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further botanizing brings garlic, onions, a tomato, plus pea pods and green grapes, which I damage a bit right away with my zero skill. Without a saw or sickle I break a branch off a tulip tree – damaged too, but it's some kind of tool to start with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step outside Freedom ground onto land under Jackal influence and everything turns red – the sky, the forest, the grass. The green pillar of the portal is still visible in the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's hard to find anything – every spot runs dry quickly and I damage most finds right away. The herbs yield cumin, lovage, thyme, basil and oregano. The new sources are more interesting: in a battlefield wreckage I find two unidentified fragments and a leather sleeve, which I put on and repair right away, and in a rift outcrop some rift wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gathering went on: eggs and silk in an egg mass, more fragments and a studded leather cap in a battlefield wreckage (straight onto my head), a long horn and hooves in carrion, a rift crystal in a rift outcrop, clay and a rock in mineral debris, and blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, lingonberries and hazelnuts in the bushes – with thorns as a bonus. On the way I passed a venerable feral canid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally something got me. I went at an adolescent rift beast with a branch, an adolescent black bear joined in, and in under a minute I was dead. I respawned in Freedom Outpost West – with nothing, all my belongings stayed with the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After respawning I gather everything again: logs, woad, flowers, oleander, sprouts and acorns. While I'm rummaging in the undergrowth, an aged drakespirit flies out of the dark – with one bite it hurts my thigh badly, causing internal damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I got away from the drakespirit and keep gathering – rosemary, oregano and mint. In the bushes I come across another Jackal native.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A venerable ferropod – a huge snail with a rusty, scaly shell. According to the developers' preview it's one of Jackal's new mobs and it drops iron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without stamina you walk very slowly, and every climb uphill is torture. I pass more freshly founded settlements – Sunset, Moonhaven, Rinjas Used Cars, Meals Ready To Eat – where people are already digging and cutting trees. On the way red mushrooms, garlic, silk and tar from an egg mass, some meat, and for a boost I suck on an egg. Most importantly, though, I finally have two rocks – on Jackal that's a real treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Night is falling. Between the dark red trees the green pillar of the portal in town is visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had to go back to spawn, because the lack of water made walking really hard. I return to Freedom Outpost West and finally drink from the fountain. Right then an announcement comes that the server will restart in half an hour – a Jackal-only hotfix to increase the density of some resource nodes. I wasn't the only one complaining that it's hard to find anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the restart I still managed to roast some meat and open a bank account in Freedom Outpost West (the bank won't take stone shards). Then another round of gathering: mint, rosemary, onion, garlic, parsley, cumin, a carrot and raspberries with thorns. Along the way I learned the name of those red trees – it's the desolate tree; there's also a frond tree nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three minutes until the hotfix that's supposed to increase the number of resource nodes, because it's hard to find anything here. I've set up next to a rock face – maybe after the restart a mineral node will spawn here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
