Some time ago I wanted to repair the highway east towards Dragons Rest. Everything went quickly and smoothly, until a certain spot…

I thought the whole thing would take 2 days, just a few catseyes to place and done. Unfortunately this bridge stood in the way.

Built on clay. You can’t build a highway on it. You can see someone put a lot of work into preparing the area for building, and then this:D You could change these tiles into something else, but who would take the easy way out? That left digging a tunnel or building an alternative road. Now I don’t know which would have been less work. I chose the tunnel.

As usual, first a small safehouse with a bed, then exploring the area to find the best location for the tunnel. The remains of other tunnels with lots of reinforced walls didn’t make the job any easier, but in the end I managed to fit it perfectly between them.

It took a lot of digging to get a level and high enough spot to open the entrance. Level it, don’t fall, don’t get eaten…

21 x 2 tiles west, 16 x 2 north and done. If it weren’t for 7 low quality veins at over 9000 each and a few smaller ones… I also had to dig the exit out considerably, because of course it wasn’t level. Then just reinforcing the walls, the “floor” and raising the “ceiling” and done:)

Instead of 2 days it took almost 3 weeks, but now there’s a highway and easier travel.
It’s worth checking random “pile of items”
